Peusangan Elephant Conservation Initiative (PECI) - Habitat Improvement
PROJECT
in progress
Description
WWF Indonesia, Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Aceh, and PT Tusam Hutani Lestari are collaborating to improve elephant habitat quality within the PT THL concession area, which serves as a core habitat for Gajah Sumatra in Aceh. The initiative focuses on habitat improvement through the planting of elephant forage species and protective tree species, as well as the development of salt licks and artificial water ponds to support the ecological needs of elephants as natural resources continue to decline. This initiative is important because elephants are increasingly entering settlements and community plantations, resulting in high levels of human–elephant conflict. By restoring habitat functions within the PT THL landscape, the partnership aims to encourage elephants to remain within their natural habitat, reduce conflict intensity, and strengthen long-term coexistence between local communities and wildlife through sustainable landscape-based conservation.
