Description
The Sebangau–Katingan (SEKA) landscape in Central Kalimantan is one of Indonesia's most valuable peat-swamp forest systems. It is home to the world's largest known wild population of the Critically Endangered Bornean orangutan and is critical habitat for the Endangered proboscis monkey, all within the customary lands of Dayak Ngaju communities. More than 130,000 ha of degraded land has been mapped for restoration: around 25,000 ha highly degraded and over 105,000 ha moderately degraded. This land spans Sebangau National Park, six forest and plantation concessions, 26 community forests and two university-managed forests.
SEKA is ready for investment because a strong coalition is already in place. It brings together provincial and district governments, forest management units, Sebangau National Park, Palangka Raya University, conservation partners such as BOSF and BNF, and local communities working through the Katingan–Sebangau Social Forestry Forum. With these partners on the ground, restoration funding in SEKA can quickly produce results: healthier peatlands, reconnected orangutan habitat and stronger livelihoods for local communities.
