Description
Mahantis is an acronym for “Utilize Degraded Land.” This initiative was launched by the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Bapperida) of Gunung Mas Regency in 2021 as a response to the high level of land degradation caused by small-scale artisanal mining activities in the area. The Mahantis Program is funded by the Forestry Service through the Land Rehabilitation Program, with technical facilitation from WWF with support from IKEA, and is implemented by the Puran Mahantis Group of Tanjung Riu Village. The research activities are supported by the Environmental Standards Implementation Center in Banjarbaru and academics from the Christian University of Palangka Raya. The main goal of this program is to rehabilitate degraded former mining sites by planting species that provide economic value for local communities. Restoration efforts are carried out through the production of compost blocks and the technical design of agroforestry systems using local plant species and fruit trees.
