Restoration of the Labian Leboyan Corridor - MHA Menua Kelayam

PROJECT
in progress
Description
WWF supported the government and communities in the corridor area since 2008 focusing on ecotourism, green village development, community economic development and area restoration. Between 2010 – 2018, WWF assisted the restoration and rehabilitation of 1,003.83 ha in several villages (Sungai Abau, Lanjak Deras, Sepandan, Labian). Since 2020, WWF assisted the sub-village Kelayam of Menua Sadap village in an effort to reconnect the Labian-Leboyan Corridor through customary area recognition and strengthening community area management (incl. restoration). Kelayam is home to Dayak Iban people. The Kelayam area and its surroundings is one of the key steppingstones to reconnect the Labian Leboyan corridor as the habitat of orangutans and home range of various types of wildlife. In the previous project phase, the District already recognized Kelayam’s customary area rights. National recognition still needs to be followed up; as well as connecting sustainable area management to sustainable income opportunities
