Description
The existence of sago in Ebha Sekhe is increasingly threatened due to development which often ignores the preservation of sago land. Many sago plantations have been moved without replanting efforts, causing the sago population to continue to decline. This is concerning, considering that the ecological, economic and cultural value of sago is important for community food security. A group of youth from the Robonghollo Arts and Culture Studio together with traditional leaders, village youth, village government and partners such as WWF are committed to returning the glory of the sago plant. Since 2023, they have planted 350 sago trees in Ebha Hekhe Sago Hamlet (6 hectares) and another 150 trees outside the area. Apart from that, they have educated around 1,500 students from elementary to university level about the importance of preserving sago. This restoration campaign has begun to inspire people in Sereh Village and two other villages to plant sago independently and collaborate with the government.
